Leonine Sea Monster from Guillaume Rondelet's Libri de Piscibus Marinis (Book of Marine Fishes),published in 1554. There was a common view that animals found on land had their scaly (and often finned) counterparts below water. Of the 'sea lion' Leonine monster Rondelet writes in Book 16 of his 'Histoire',"I have often doubted whether this was a real marine monster. I have been personally assured that one was caught in the sea before the death of Pope Paul III" | |
