Folio Copper Plate, later hand colour,Published 1657-65 Amsterdam for Historiae Naturalis by John Jonston. Illustrated by Caspar and Matthias Merian. Dragons were still included in encylopedias of animals because their existence was still unproven in the 17th century. The later discovery of dinosaurs would show that such stranger creatures could exist. Many dragons owed their existance to taxidermy forgeries - and one such is the "Jenny Haniver" in the middle of the picture which was produced (and are still produced) by tying and cutting a dead ray to dry in a dragonlike pose. The earliest picture of such a taxidermy hoax is in Conrad Gesner's 16th century Historia Animalium | |
