John Dollond June 1706 - 30 November 1761. Tinted copperplate engraving from "The Gallery of Portraits" by Posselwaite 1837,hand coloured after painting by Benjamin Wilson. A Fellow of the Royal Society and English optician, famous for his commercialisation of achromatic doublets in glasses. Though other scientists had produced such lenses before it was Dollond who exploited them commercially and this point was key in upholding a patent made by his son after his father's death. John Dollond appears to have refrained from seeking patent himself as he knew he did not have priority on the invention. The family company survives as Dollond and Aitchison to this day | |
