Exquisite miniature Portrait of adult broad bordered bee hawk moth (Hemaris fuciformis) by Rosel from his work "Insect Amusements" 1744. August Johann Rosel von Rosenhof (March 30,1705 – March 27,1759) was a German miniature painter, naturalist and entomologist. Inspired by the work of Maria Sybella Merian,he endeavoured to show all stages of an insects life history in life-poses where possible. To this end he raised and dissected many insects he found in the surrounding German countryside. He produced some of the most beautiful insect studies ever printed, and is recognised as an important figure in early entomology. Insects such as Rosel's Cricket are named after him,and indeed Linnaeus used many of Rosel's descriptions for his taxonomy | |
