Koala,Phascolarctos cinereus, engraving with original hand colouring from F.-E. Guerin-Meneville: Dictionnaire pittoresque d'histoire naturelle. Paris,1834-1839. Koalas were only discovered in June-September 1803 and involved the type specimens collected at 'Hat Hill' (Mount Kembla) in the Illawarra district of New South Wales, south of Sydney. The biologists of Cook's voyages had not observed it. This print is the most attractive early published illustration and derives directly from the painting by John Lewin in 1803 which was part of the first description to reach Joseph Banks in England | |
