LM of a common green lacewing (Chrysoperla carnea) egg,above the surface of a leaf. A female lacewing deposits up to 200 eggs per reproductive period,attaching each to the top of a hair-like filament. The image shows the last 10% of the long filament with the attached egg. Suspending the egg above the leaf protects it from predation. The egg later hatches into a carnivorous larva feeding mostly on aphids. Microscopic contrast method : incident brightfield.
