Zeolite crystal growth in space. A bubble formed as a result of a Zeolite Crystal Growth (ZCG) experiment in the Destiny laboratory on the International Space Station (ISS). The ZCG investigations showed that bubbles in the sample mixtures could cause a larger number of smaller deformed crystals to grow. The microgravity environment allowed growth of higher-quality crystals. Zeolites are hydrated aluminosilicate minerals sometimes called molecular sieves . A number of industrial processes use zeolite catalysts, notably in the cracking of petroleum. Photographed in 2002 | |
