Light microscopy of stratified squamous epithelial cells. This epithelium is typical of a multi-layered tissue that is soft and deformable yet acts as an effective barrier. The tissue is within the oral cavity. The deeper cell layers of prickle (spinous) cells are bordered by thousands of minute densities. These are desmosome tight junctions that bind adjacent cells together and prevent cell separation. Magnification x600 when printed at 10 cm | |
