Southern view of the Milky Way,ranging from the bright galactic bulge in Sagittarius and Scorpius at left,to Centaurus and Crux (the Southern Cross) at right. The bright red-orange star Antares (the Scorpion's heart) is at upper left. Alpha and Beta Centauri,the two brightest stars of Centaurus are at upper right. The Coalsack Nebula (a dark nebula) is near the Southern Cross at top right. This area of the Milky Way,with its dark nebulae,has a distinctive shape that has been described in Australian Aboriginal astronomy as 'The Emu'.
