Favosites are an extinct kind of tabulate corals that lived during most of the Paleozoic era in shallow marine waters. They are characterized by polygonal closely-packed tubes called corallites that grow upwards and are separated by horizontal shelfs or tabulae. They have the appearance of honeycombs, which is why they are popularly known as "honeycomb corals". The fossil remains here seen are from glacial debris in moraine deposits accumulated during the Pleistocene Ice Ages in the north Netherlands. The boulders and coarse debris in these deposits are mostly derived from Paleozoic rocks in Scandinavia. Sample width is 160 mm | |
