Termination of the respiratory tree or passages within the lung. A terminal bronchiole is seen to branch giving rise to respiratory bronchioles then the alveolar ducts and ending in clusters of very thin-walled alveoli. Gas exchange occurs between air in the alveoli and capillaries running in their walls. The margin to the right (blue stained) is the pleural surface of the lung.
