Silver-stained section of adult bone tissue viewed by light microscopy. The cells of bone, osteocytes, display many thin elongated cytoplasmic processes (black) that extend into the bone matrix (orange). Osteocytes are arranged into cylindrical structures called Haversian systems or osteons. Exchange of nutrients and minerals such as calcium and phosphorus occurs at these interfaces which are also linked to the blood capillary supply. Central cavities contain bone marrow.
