Polarised light micrograph of a thin section of gabbro,an igneous rock. This is a type of coarse-grained gabbro, showing mainly feldspar with randomly orientated fractures of lath- shaped crystals and olivine. Feldspar forms lath-shaped crystals consisting of multiple twins. In this micrograph, these twins are seen in a variety of colours because a first-order red compensator plate,or "tint plate",has been placed in the microscope. Horizontal object size of this section: 3.0 mm | |
