Patient in fever machine. Patient receiving treatment in the 1940s in a fever machine in a United States Army hospital in Melbourne,Australia. A new treatment at the time,the machine kept the patient's temperature at just under 42 degrees Celsius (any higher is fatal). This artificial fever,like natural fevers,was designed to kill pathogens such as viruses causing infections in the patient. The ice in the basin,the towel,and the fan (lower left) are being used to cool the patient's head. This 1943 photograph is part of a collection from the United States Office of War Information
