Female peppered moth (Biston betularia) camouflaged on a tree trunk. Two forms of this moth occur,a pale form (seen here) and a dark form. The dark form became dominant in parts of northern England after the industrial revolution,when trees were covered by black soot. This phenomenon is known as industrial melanism,which is an example of natural selection. The pale form is common throughout most of Britain
