Light microscopy of the trachea. The inner lining consists of a so-called respiratory epithelium although no gas exchange or respiration occurs in the trachea. Blue-stained cells in the pseudostratified columnar surface epithelium are goblet cells secreting mucus. Occasional mucoid-type glands are deep and part of the tracheal rings of cartilage (with some folding artefacts) are noted. Magnification x25 when narrow width printed at 10 cm | |
