Light microscopy of a tumour of the human large bowel. This is a polyp classified as a tubulo-villus/serrated adenoma as it resembles the structure of the small bowel. Adenomas of the bowel are benign but are predisposed to developing cancer termed adenocarcinoma which is a malignant tumour that spreads from its site of origin to invade local and/or other parts of the body. Polyps and adenomas may arise in response to many factors including exposure to carcinogens, high fat-low fibre diet, inflammatory conditions, and a family history of specific genetic disorders.
