Light microscopy of compact bone in an unstained ground section. The minute nuclei are osteocytes arranged in roughly circular patterns. These are called osteons or Haversian systems and comprise concentric layers of bone matrix. Black structures represent blood vessels artificially filled with debris arising from the preparation process. Blood vessels linking groups of osteons are termed Volkmann's canals.
