Light microscopy of some myelinated and mostly unmyelinated nerves in a nerve fibre. Nerve axons show a wave-like pattern interspersed with scattered nuclei of Schwann cells and fibroblasts. Schwann cells are non-neural cells that provide support for the axons. Unmyelinated axons are embedded in extensions of Schwann cell cytoplasm but in contrast to myelinated nerves, the Schwann cells do not form myelin sheaths surrounding the axons.
