| British geneticists Kenneth Mather (1911-1990) and John Marion Thoday (1916-2008). Mather was a geneticist and biologist and won the Darwin Medal in 1964. Thoday's research largely focused on the causes and functions of genetic variation and the effects of selection on it. He published an important thesis on the meaning of biological progress in evolution and the role of genetic variation in determining long-term fitness,and pioneered various methods and experiments.
