Edward East,US plant geneticist
Edward East (1879-1938),US plant geneticist. East specialised in crop research,particularly hybrid forms of maize. Both he and George Shull developed hybrid maize as a viable crop. East worked at Harvard University from 1909,becoming a professor at the Bussey Institution. He became Professor of Genetics there in 1926. A supporter of eugenics,and author of a number of general books on science,he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1925
