| Ammeter and recorder. Historical illustration of an ammeter,recorder and shunt from the Chauvin and Arnoux company,founded in Paris,France in 1893. An ammeter is used to measure electrical current,which is measured in amperes (amps). An ammeter shunt is used to help measure currents too large to be measured by the available ammeter. A voltmeter connected across the shunt can be calibrated to give the current reading,traced on the rotating cylinder.
