Canadian physician Lewellys Franklin Barker (1867-1943,left),US bacteriologist Frederick Novy (1864-1957,right),and US pathologist Simon Flexnor (1863-1946,seated). Barker spent most of his career John Hopkins University and Hospital,where he became Head of the Department of Medicine. Novy was a pioneer of bacteriology in the US,teaching the first course in bacteriology in the US at the University of Michigan in 1889. Flexner is best known for isolating a bacillus of dysentery (Shigella dysenteriae). Photographed in1901 | |
