Wilhelm Johannsen (1857-1927),Danish geneticist. Johannsen initially worked as a pharmacist and chemist. From 1892,he was at the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University (later part of the University of Copenhagen) where he became professor of botany and plant physiology. Johannsen worked on seed germination and breeding. He coined many of the terms used in genetics today,such as 'gene','phenotype' and 'genotype'. Johannsen's 'Arvelighedslærens Elementer' (The Elements of Heredity,1905) was a key founding text of modern genetics. Johannsen was made vice-chancellor of the University of Copenhagen in 1917
