Light microscopy of a nerve ganglion. Ganglia are collections of nerve cell bodies seen as many circular profiles stained pink. Nerve axons (wavy lines) are noted entering the ganglion at one pole. Specifically this is a sympathetic ganglion of the larger celiac ganglion plexus that functions like a junction box in telephone cables. Each axon entering the ganglion may connect with scores or hundreds of nerve cell bodies which greatly increases the signal responses carried by the axons that leave the ganglion en route to their target such as an abdominal organ.
