Light microscopy of a whole mount (thin sheet) of mesentery. A mesentery is formed by semitransparent membranes attached to most parts of the gastrointestinal tract. The dominant feature is the complex and abundant amount of elastic fibres forming a mesh-type pattern. Elastic fibres can stretch and recoil and accommodate changes in the shape and diameter of the gut. Nerves, blood vessels and lymphatics of the gut pass through the mesenteries.
