Light microscopy of an elastic- to-muscular artery transition. The elastic segment consists predominantly of multiple layers of elastic fibres in its wall whereas the muscular component shows only two layers of elastin between which is smooth muscle. Elastic arteries resist blood pressure fluctuations and muscular arteries serve to maintain blood flow to organs and tissues using their smooth muscle to control vessel diameter.
