Old mine buildings at Soudan,Minnesota. The mine was the site of the Soudan II detector,a particle physics experiment studying proton decay,atmospheric neutrino physics and magnetic monopoles. The detector was located underground to isolate it from most cosmic ray particles. It was disassembled in 2005 to make room for further low background physics experiments,including MINOS (Main Injector Neutrino Oscillation Search),designed to study the phenomena of neutrino oscillations. The current detector has a mass of 5.4 kilotonnes and is located at a depth of 716 metres. It has been fully operational,taking cosmic ray and atmospheric neutrino data,since 2003
