Light microscopy of colitis of the human large bowel. This is an inflammatory disorder that is commonly caused by the toxins associated with bacterial infection. Tissue destruction is accompanied by excessive mucus production mixed with cell debris and inflammatory leukocytes, seen here as a mass of material on the surface of the disrupted bowel mucosa. Macroscopically this resembles an abnormal membrane in the colon hence its designation as pseudomembranous colitis. The condition causes acute diarrhoea. Magnification x15 when printed at 10 cm | |
