Light microscopy of a fetal rat lung. The large empty structure entering the lung is a principal bronchus that branches many times to form the respiratory tree serving as the air passageways in the lung. Several pulmonary blood vessels partly or fully-filled with blood, penetrate into the lung. The gap between the lung and the chest wall will become the pleural cavity, reduced to a potential space after birth. A thin external pleural membrane is seen following the inner contour of the thoracic wall. Magnification x25 when printed at 10 cm | |
