Electrophoresis gel. Biochemical samples are loaded onto this gel to form bands (upper centre). An electric field is applied to the gel to separate the components. The resulting banding can be used to identify and analyse the sample. Examples of techniques that use this process into the sequencing of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) in genetic samples. The technique is also used to analyse the protein composition of cells and tissues
