Global Hawk unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV),operated by NASA,taking off from the main runway at Edwards Air Force Base,California,USA. This is Global Hawk 872,on a flight to check instruments for the 2014 ATTREX (Airborne Tropical Tropopause Experiment) Pacific Stratospheric Mission. Yellow-and-black pods housing the Hawkeye cloud particle probe instruments for this mission are mounted underneath the wings. This aircraft has a wingspan of 35 metres. Developed between 2001 and 2005 by Northrop Grumman for US military surveillance,Global Hawks have been used by NASA since 2009. Photographed on 20 December 2013
