Terra Nova Hut interior,Antarctica. Provisions inside the hut built in 1911 at Cape Evans,Antarctica,for the expedition led by British explorer Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912). This hut was the winter quarters of the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913). Also known as the Terra Nova Expedition,the primary expedition objectives were scientific. The shore party of 34 spent two seasons exploring on and around the Ross Ice Shelf. Scott and four others died in 1912 returning from their journey to the South Pole. The hut,one of the Historic Sites and Monuments in Antarctica,is being restored by the Antarctic Heritage Trust. Photographed in 2014 | |
