Cygnus X starbirth region. Herschel Space Observatory (HSO) infrared image of the Cygnus X starbirth region. Massive stars with powerful stellar winds ionise and scuplt the gas and dust in this region. These observations at far-infrared wavelengths reveal these emissions, showing star formation in unprecedented detail. Cygnus X is 4500 light years from Earth,in the constellation of Cygnus. The image combines data acquired in 2010 with the PACS (Photodetector Array Camera and Spectrometer) instrument (70 microns, blue; 160 microns, green) and with the SPIRE (Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver) instrument (250 microns, red) | |
