Ellen Richards (1842-1911),US industrial and environmental chemist. Richards was a pioneer in domestic science,sanitary chemistry and female education. She was the first woman to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT),and its first female instructor. In the 1880s she extensively sampled inland waters in Massachusetts. This lead to the first water quality standards and the first municipal sewage treatment plant.
