An open seed capsule of the giant Himalayan lily,Cardiocrinum giganteum. As it dries, the capsule splits into three segments, each with two locules containing seeds. To the right,a stack of seeds is visible within a locule, held in place by hygroscopic teeth (to lower right). To picture left are seeds that have escaped from the stack. The seeds consist of a rounded triangular central region comprising the endosperm and embryo, surrounded by a membraneous wing. Each is 12-15mm across and weighs approximately 5mg.The capsules develop on a stem up to 2.5m tall. Each holds many hundreds of seeds; their light weight and flattened shape ensures efficient wind dispersal. C. giganteum is a hardy perennial garden plant which bears large lily-like flowers in midsummer. It is monocarpic; the plant dies after flowering, leaving offset bulbs in the ground to flower in subsequent year | |
