Quasar. Computer illustration showing a quasar emitting a galactic jet (white, diagonal). Quasars are bright, energetic regions around giant, active black holes in galactic centres. Although immensely powerful and visible across billions of light years, quasars are actually quite tiny,at least compared to an entire galaxy. The source of light appears concentrated in the nucleus, and is thought to be related to a central supermassive black hole. Such a system would probably have galactic jets emanating from the core,as shown here. Quasars have high red shifts,so must be very distant and thus seen at a very early stage in the Universe's history | |
