Secondary syphilis. 19th-century illustration of a man's face with the pustular form (ecthyma syphilitica) of syphilitic cutaneous disease. This is a symptom of the secondary stage of syphilis is a sexually transmitted (venereal) infection caused by the Treponema pallidum bacterium. About 6 to 12 weeks after infection,secondary syphilis occurs which includes a skin rash,headache,fatigue and fever. First recorded in Europe in the 15th century,no effective treatment was available before 1910 and it could be fatal.
