Thomas Spencer Wells,British surgeon
Thomas Spencer Wells (1818-1897),British surgeon. Spencer Wells studied medicine at Leeds and Trinity College,Dublin,and worked at St Thomas' Hospital in London,as well as in Paris. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) in 1844. He specialized in obstetrics and ophthalmic surgery,pioneering forms of abdominal surgery. He invented the Spencer Wells forceps,a clamp used to seal blood vessels. In 1833 he was created a baronet and elected President of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. From 1863 to 1896 he was surgeon to Queen Victoria. His works include 'Diagnosis and Surgical Treatment of Abdominal Tumours' (1885)
