Scott at Antarctic winter party. British Royal Navy officer and explorer Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) at the head of the table during a dinner on the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913). This celebratory Midwinter Day Dinner was held in the base camp hut on 22 June 1911 to mark the midpoint of the long polar night. See image C021/6908 for the full scene and more details. Also known as the Terra Nova Expedition,the shore party of 34 spent two seasons exploring on and around the Ross Ice Shelf. Scott and four others died in 1912 returning from their journey to the South Pole. This photograph is a composite produced by Herbert George Ponting
