Evans and Scott on Terra Nova. British explorers Lieutenant Teddy Evans (left,1880-1957) and Captain Robert Falcon Scott (right,1868-1912) on the Terra Nova on 1 January 1911 as it sailed to Antarctica during the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913). Also known as the Terra Nova Expedition,the primary expedition objectives were scientific. Departing New Zealand on 29 November,they landed at Cape Evans on 4 January 1911. A shore party of 34,led by Scott,spent two seasons exploring on and around the Ross Ice Shelf. Scott and four others died in 1912 returning from the South Pole. Photograph by Herbert George Ponting
