Stomach digestion research. 19th-century illustration of Canadian woodsman Alexis St. Martin (1802-1880) and his gastric fistula (lower right),used for experiments on stomach physiology by US Army surgeon William Beaumont (1785-1853). The fistula resulted from a gunshot wound in 1822. Beaumont,who had treated St. Martin,carried out experiments on digestion by using the fistula to place food on strings in St. Martin's stomach. The research was published in 'Experiments and Observations on the Gastric Juice and the Physiology of Digestion' (1833). This artwork is from 'Life and Letters of Dr. William Beaumont' (1912)
