VLT and laser guide under stars. Stars over the telescopes of the Very Large Telescope (VLT),with the Yepun telescope shining a laser guide,at the Paranal Observatory,Atacama desert,Chile. This beam creates a guide star in the atmosphere,which is used to calibrate the telescope to remove the effects of the atmosphere on observations,a process known as adaptive optics
