Anaesthetic inhaler,1913. This is a DeFord inhaler for use with either somnoform or nitrous oxide during dental surgery. The inhaler has both an oral mask (bottom) and nasal mask (centre). This allowed the administration of anaesthesia to continue while dental surgery was performed. Somnoform was a mixture of anaesthetic liquids ethyl chloride,methyl chloride and ethyl bromide. It produced a longer lasting anaesthesia than did ethyl chloride alone,but it was more toxic and was no longer used by the late 1920s
