Murphy chloroform inhaler,1848. This anaesthetic inhaler was designed by Edward William Murphy (1802-1877),a British obstetrician who adopted the use of chloroform after its introduction in 1847. Some anesthetic inhalers covered both the nose and the mouth,but Murphy believed his mouthpiece-only inhaler was less likely to produce a dangerous overdose. The funnel-shaped mouthpiece is attached to a chamber into which was placed a sponge soaked with chloroform. For pain relief during labour Murphy recommended that the woman inhale just before and during contractions,and but not between contractions
