Anaesthetic inhaler,1899. This is a Wilson-Smith inhaler,a modification of the Clover ether inhaler introduced in 1877. Inhalers delivered air and controlled quantities of volatile anaesthetic liquids,such as ether or chloroform,to a patient during surgery. Wilson-Smith's design increased the bore of the internal airways in the device to match the size of the human trachea. The mask (bottom) fitted over the patient's nose and mouth
