| Watt steam engine,18th century. Illustration of a vertical section through the condenser mechanism in a Watt steam engine. Scottish engineer and inventor James Watt (1736-1819) made key improvements to the existing Newcomen steam engine. Watt's version (1765) caused the steam to condense in a separate chamber (condenser) apart from the piston. This helped to maintain the temperature of the cylinder at that of the injected steam.
