Celestine or celestite, also written coelestine or coelestite,is a fairly common mineral,a strontium sulphate (SrSO4) best known to outsiders in the form of well developed crystals that can be colourless, milky white, pale blue or yellow. Its occurrence however is much wider in non- crystalline form,in association with sedimentary deposits of other salts, like halite, gypsum, anhydrite and other evapotites. Celestine,is the main ore for strontium and its salts, and is used in making fireworks. It also has uses in the nuclear industry, the manufacture of paints, electrical batteries and porcelain. Celestine crystals are occasionally cut and used as a gem stone, but rather rarely in view of the minerals low hardness. This sample is a rare occurrence of radially accrued, amorphous celestine in a bedrock of dark shale. Actual width of sample is 21 cm | |
