The blue Morpho butterfly, latin name Morpho peleides,is among the largest butterflies in the world, with wings 12 to 20 cm wide tip to tip, which explains its other byname the Emperor. Its wings are bright blue with black edges. The intensity of the blue of the wings is explained by iridescence given off by tiny scales on the backside of the wings, which reflect light. The underside of the morpho's wings is completely different, being a dreary brown with many eyespots. So with wings closed, which is the case most of the time, predators such as birds and large insects are scared off | |
