Salicornia is a genus of succulent,halophyte (salt tolerant) plants that grow in salt marshes,on beaches,and among mangroves. Common names for the genus include glasswort,pickleweed,and marsh samphire,names also used for some species not of the genus Salicornia. Salicornia has a jointed horizontal main stem and erect lateral branches,usually less than 30 cm tall. It is native to coastal regions world wide,and both in Europe and North American it is eaten,a desirable vegetable sold in grocery stores or appearing on restaurant menus under such names as marsh samphire or samphire greens.
